College of Creative Arts Residencies Fund

Massey University’s College of Creative Arts, in partnership with the Massey University Foundation, aims to establish an enduring and impactful artist in residence programme made up of multiple Wellington-based residencies throughout the year supported by a newly established fund; the College of Creative Arts Residencies Fund.

Currently, there is limited opportunity for emerging artists to develop their creative research and produce innovative work in an environment relatively free from the pressures of time and money.

This unique constellation of residencies will develop creative arts research and practice, bring new knowledge to the city, enrich the student experience through collaboration with our emerging young artists, and enhance Wellington’s reputation as a creative hub.

The residencies play a significant role in supporting artists to develop their practices, as well as teaching, collaborating and exposing our students, faculty, creative industries and the public to the work of a wide range of creative practitioners who come to share their knowledge and contribute to our creative ecosystem.

Residents are tasked with developing a creative response to a New Zealand or global challenge, working with faculty, students and the wider community, and often exhibiting their work.

Presently, two residencies exist and are partially funded and supported by the College. Two more residencies are currently in development. However, the College is focused on providing excellent teaching and learning opportunities for its students, therefore establishing a fund for its residency programme will release pressure on precious College funds.

The College currently runs and funds two existing residencies;

  • Matairangi Mahi Toi for Māori and Pacific artists – hosted by the Governor General and housed on the grounds of Government House, it supports the development of Māori and Pacific artists.
  • Te Whare Hēra Wellington International Art Residency - established in 2014, a visiting international artist programme open to practitioners in contemporary art. The residency is located on the Wellington waterfront at Clyde Quay Wharf and run in partnership with Wellington City Council.

Two new residencies will be created from the sustained fund;

  • Wellington International Design Residency - developed in partnership with the Wellington design community and supported by Wellington City Council and Experience Wellington. Housed in the Wellington Botanic Gardens, residents will respond to a design challenge or opportunity within the city.
  • Music and Creative Media Production Residency – Still in development, it will connect with and enhance Wellington’s music, film, gaming and technology industries.
