Refectory Building
Celebrating our past - ensuring our future!
Massey University Foundation is currently raising funds for the refurbishment and strengthening of the historic Refectory building, designed by Roy Lippincott and completed in 1931.
The Refectory is one of the three original Massey Agricultural College buildings on the Manawatü campus. The University plans to make this historic building the heart of the campus, headquarters for the University, and a local heritage icon for the region. The restoration will be an investment in preserving the University’s unique history as well as improving its profile, enterprise, and operational capacity, ensuring the continued world-class standard of Massey’s programmes and graduates.
A new ‘annex’ will be built and attached to the Refectory by a glass walkway and this will house the University Chancellery. The original dining hall and student common room of the Refectory will display memorabilia and will be used for functions as well as being open to the public for inspection.
It is anticipated that the Refectory restoration will begin in September 2018, with a build schedule of 12 months to complete both the Refectory and the new annex.

COST OF THE PROJECT
The substantial job of restoring and earthquake proofing the Heritage NZ Category II building has a budget of $6.225 million. The University has contributed $2.625 million to the project and is now reaching out to its alumni and local community to fundraise the remaining $3.6 million. The restoration cannot be entirely borne by the University which is under pressure to, first and foremost, provide core teaching and learning services from an increasingly restricted budget.
